Bright and cheerful, the designs of Connie Sheerin feature mixed-media mosaics applied to flea-market finds or wooden bases. With a colorful array of glass and mirror pieces, tiles, marbles, broken pottery, seashells, and buttons, she covers frames, flowerpots, lamps, tables, shelves, bookends, chairs, clocks, and boxes. The pictures are clear and the directions good, and patterns are included wherever necessary. Most projects are fairly easy, although the three objects on hand-cut bases (a large frame and two backsplashes) will require some practice with the scroll saw. A number of projects are given a unique look through the use of plaster shapes cast in small plaster or candy molds and then painted; thus the mosaic pattern on a shelf displaying a teapot collection incorporates little teapots and cups, or a frame for the kitchen is adorned with miniature veggies. Sheerin also thoughtfully offers guidelines on two important concepts not always covered in other books on the subject: how to estimate the amount of mosaic materials needed for your own projects (quantities are already given for the ones in the book), and how to transfer designs. --Amy Handy
